The mother who abandoned her baby in a Garden City trash bin faces two to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to child abuse and abandonment today.

Desiree Walker’s sentencing in Wayne County Circuit Court is scheduled for April 27. She was originally charged with attempted murder, child abuse and child abandonment.

Teens walking near the trash bin in November heard the 7-pound 4-ounce baby girl’s cries and rescued the infant, who had been wrapped in a plastic bag. Police used a receipt in the bag to trace the baby to Walker.

Walker, 22, told police she was trying to hide the pregnancy from her family.

She pleaded guilty to child abuse, with a sentencing agreement of five to 15 years in prison, and child abandonment, with 2 to 10 years in prison, to be served concurrently, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.
