A COBURG mother who crashed her car into a pole with her two children on board was allegedly more than four times the legal alcohol limit.

Police caught the 30-year-old woman after the accident in Pascoe Vale at about 2.30am today.

It is believed the 2002 Holden Commodore sedan was travelling south on Park St when it veered off the road, mounted the kerb and collided with a timber power pole about 2.30am.

The two young passengers, aged 12 and eight, walked away uninjured despite their mother registering a blood alcohol reading of 0.240.

All three were treated by ambulance officers at the scene.

The 30-year-old Coburg woman is expected to be charged on summons with exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol and other driving offences.

She told police she had no excuse for her actions, other than she had been drinking at a friend’s house and needed to get home.

Constable Sean Scully said the woman and two children were out of the car when police arrived.

"The vehicle was extensively damaged, as was the pole,'' Constable Scully said.

"The children were upset and shaken up.

"She (the driver) was a little bit unsteady on her feet. Her response was that she just wanted to get home.''

An intial breath test showed there was alcohol in the driver's system. When they took her back to the police station, they were shocked when she blew .240.

"It's careless having your children in your car and it's quite shocking for us to see, especially after all the road campaigns advertised on the TV and radio,'' Constable Scully said.

"If you are going to get behind the wheel of a car, don't drink ... it's as simple as that.''

Police said the woman half heartedly acknowledged she had done the wrong thing but "was fairly blase about the whole situation".

The children were collected by a friend while their mother was interviewed at the Brunswick Police Station.

An ambulance attended the scene but no one was taken to hospital.

"It's pretty careless of a mother to do something like that,'' Constable Scully said.
